He has a sister, Dinara Safina (born on April 26, 1986, and enrolled in the current POLO Open).He liked Spartak Moscow football team, the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team and its super center Shaquille O'Neal. When he was at 13-19 years,he went into training in Valencia,where there were many Spanish players to practice with.He was awarded the Best Newcomer of ATP,and won the 2000 Most Improved Player Award.
